D-Day & the Battle for Normandy
An 80th Anniversary Guided Tour
May 9th – May 16th, 2024
On June 6, 1944, the picturesque coast of Normandy became the scene of the largest and most complex military operation in world history. On that day alone over 130,000 Allied soldiers, supported by over 6,000 ships and 12,000 aircraft, attacked beaches whose names have become legendary; while 24,000 more troops entered the battle by glider and parachute.
Over the next eleven weeks, fierce combat raged across a once-bucolic Normandy landscape. By the end of the battle in August, the Allies had won a key success that would put them on the road to eventual victory over Nazi Germany.
Today, Normandy is again a peaceful and beautiful region, where the echoes of the past reach out to us at every turn. Come with us and visit the places where brave men fought for freedom, and where the history of the world was changed forever.

Our Normandy tour is suitable for both the student of World War 2 history and the newcomer to the subject. Unlike some companies that spend only three or four days actually in Normandy, we devote all of our time to touring this picturesque, historically rich region.

Our group will gather at our airport hotel in the evening for a short briefing, and the next morning we board our coach for the journey to Normandy.
From May 11, we will tour Normandy from our ‘base’ in beautiful Bayeux, returning to our airport hotel on the evening of May 16. Unless you are staying over, you will want to book your return flight home on for May 17.
Unless you are planning to arrive early, tour participants will depart their North American airports on May 9, 2024 for an overnight flight. The return date – the date you will be flying back to your North American airport, unless you decide to stay over – is May 17.
Air Travel: Each tour participant will need to make their own flight arrangements. This allows you to utilize frequent flier miles and other benefits you may have accrued. It is also likely that many of you will be coming from different states. Once you are booked, we will provide you with information concerning our group’s hotel at Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport. As participants arrive throughout May 10, they may check into a room (early check-in is not guaranteed by the hotel) and rest up or take the short train ride into Paris for the day. The next morning, we will board our coach for Normandy.
Coach Travel: Our tour of Normandy will be conducted using a modern air-conditioned coach. Depending upon numbers, it is possible (though unlikely) that you may seated next to another single traveler.
Accommodations: The hotels we are utilizing for the tour are all 3+ star properties with either an in-house restaurant or dining within easy walking distance.
Meals: Breakfasts are included in the price of the tour, plus two dinners and three lunches. Other meals will be ‘on your own.’ Each day’s itinerary will include a lunch stop.
Materials: Registered participants will receive an educational booklet containing maps, historical and travel information that will enhance your visit. Be sure to bring it on the tour.
Health: Please be certain to check with your health insurer to determine whether their coverage extends to travel in Europe. If not, or if you desire additional coverage, you are strongly advised to consider obtaining travel insurance, which can also cover you for matters like luggage loss or damage, trip cancellation, etc.
Covid-19: At this time France does not require proof of vaccination for entry.
Personal Mobility: Please note that while our itinerary is not strenuous, it will on a few occasions involve standing or walking for up to 20 minutes at a time. Terrain can include beaches, fields, inclines, and stairs. It is imperative that you advise us if you or any member of your travel party has a physical disability or other medical condition that might inhibit full participation in the tour, as we may not be able to provide the necessary assistance required. If in any doubt about how a disability might impact participation and enjoyment of the tour, we strongly encourage you to contact us so we may discuss whether this trip is suitable for your situation.
Travel Insurance:

May 10: Tour participants arrive from their North American airports at various times throughout the day. You will be able to check into our CDG Airport hotel in the afternoon. No activities are planned until evening, giving you the chance to take the train into Paris for a little sightseeing, or simply relax before we set out for Normandy the following morning. We will have a reception and briefing in the hotel in the evening. [Night at CDG Airport hotel]
May 11: Departing our airport hotel for Normandy in the morning, we travel to Benouville and have lunch along the scenic Caen Canal. After lunch, we tour battle sites of the British airborne troops, including the famous Pegasus Bridge, stormed by glider troops in the opening minutes of D-Day. In the evening, we will check into our Bayeux hotel and enjoy a group welcome dinner at a local restaurant. [Night in Bayeux}
May 12: Our focus today will be on the U.S. Airborne forces and Utah Beach. Much of the day will be spent visiting battlefields of the 82nd and 101st Airborne divisions, including La Fiere Bridge, the Maj. Dick Winters monument, and famous Ste. Mère Église where we will discuss the fight for the town and have lunch. Our next stop is Utah Beach to discuss the landings and take in the excellent museum. [Night in Bayeux]
May 13: We spend the day immersing ourselves in the Omaha Beach sector. Our starting point is the German cemetery at La Cambe. We then head to the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc, scaled by the Rangers in a dramatic assault. Then on to the beach itself, where we will take in the story of ‘Bloody Omaha’, starting with Vierville (portrayed in Saving Pvt. Ryan). After lunch, we visit the magnificent American Cemetery. [Night in Bayeux]
May 14: On this day we spend our morning with British and Canadian landing beaches at Gold and Juno and tour the Longues-sur-mer battery, the only German gun position in Normandy with original armament still in place. After lunch at quaint Arromanches with its remnants of the Mulberry Harbor, we return to Bayeux to visit the Battle of Normandy Museum and the famous Bayeux Tapestry. [Night in Bayeux]
May 15: We journey to some of the inland American battlefields, discussing the fighting in the notorious Bocage hedgerow country toward St. Lô and visiting sites pertaining to Operation Cobra, the U.S. offensive that finally began the breakout of Allied forces from Normandy. We then proceed to breathtaking Mont St. Michel – a World Heritage Site – and end our day at the heights of Mortain, where troops of the American 30th Division made a desperate stand [Night in Bayeux]
May 16: After checking out of our Bayeux hotel, we follow the final battles for Normandy, including the visitor center at Montormel, where Polish troops fought to close the Falaise Gap; all the while enjoying beautiful countryside. We will be back at our CDG Airport hotel in the evening to enjoy a farewell dinner together in the hotel’s restaurant. [Night at CDG Airport hotel].
May 17: Return flights to North America.
Pegasus Bridge / Merville Battery:
The storied Normandy landmark where it all began. Just minutes after midnight, June 6, British glider troops landed in a high-risk operation to seize the strategically vital bridge. Stand where these heroes undertook their daring mission, making a mighty contribution to D-Day’s success.
Sainte Mère Église:
Made famous in ‘The Longest Day’ for Pvt. John Steele’s landing on the town’s church steeple. In the early hours of D-Day, U. S. paratroops dropped on Ste. Mère Église, setting off a bitter firefight that resulted in it being the first French town liberated.
Although U. S. forces landed off course, the landing here was achieved with minimal casualties, thanks in part to the efforts of Gen. Teddy Roosevelt, Jr. Today Utah preserves much of its wartime appearance. We will also visit the excellent museum here.
Omaha Beach:
When the complex invasion plan fell apart on the morning of June 6, guts and improvisation allowed the Americans to succeed in the face of terrible losses: not for nothing is this lovely stretch of sand known as ‘Bloody Omaha’. We will visit several key points along the four-plus mile beach, including the Vierville Draw and German resistance nest WN-62.
Pointe du Hoc:
Marvel at the sheer cliffs scaled by the Rangers in the effort to knock out the German gun battery here. Today Pointe du Hoc is administered by the U. S. government and retains its scars of war, from enormous shell craters to smashed concrete bunkers.
Arromanches:
This quaint seaside community was at the center of the Allied landings. We will stand on the cliffs above the town and view Gold Beach and the remains of the massive Mulberry Harbor offshore.
American Cemetery:
The best-known U. S. overseas cemetery, it is the final resting place for 9,387 Americans who fell in World War Two, most of them in the battle for Normandy. There is no more moving site along the invasion coast. We will lay a wreath in remembrance of these brave men and women.
The ‘Bocage’:
On our route following the American effort to break out from the beaches we will sample the insidious ‘bocage’ –Normandy’s deadly hedgerow country.
Batterie de Longues:
The best-preserved German battery in Normandy, its big guns, ensconced in massive concrete emplacements, still point toward the English Channel.
Falaise / Mont Ormel:
We follow the costly advance of British and Canadian units in their effort to pry the Germans out of Falaise. After, we take in the museum and overlook at Montormel, where in late August ’44, Polish soldiers gallantly repelled attack after attack while holding the ‘Falaise Pocket’ closed in the last battle of the Normandy campaign.
Juno Beach:
The crucial lynchpin between the British landings at Gold and Sword, Canada’s troops hit the beach here, suffering heavy losses but making some of the deepest D-Day gains. We will visit the memorial park and discuss the challenges faced by the young Canadians.
You will have the option of visiting this magnificent monastery, one of France’s most popular and recognizable places; for additional information see the tour itinerary section describing May 15th.
Mortain:
On the imposing heights above the town, a few hundred G.I.s stubbornly held off a much larger German force in early August 1944 in one of the epic small-unit actions of the campaign.
Our tour also takes in the historic Bayeux Tapestry, some of the region’s best military museums, and a number of sites not listed above.
Please note that spaces will be reserved on a ‘first-come, first served’ basis. It is our intention to limit the size of our Normandy tour group to a maximum of approximately 25 persons. This will ensure that we have an intimate and manageable group size, increasing your enjoyment of the trip. As interest in this tour has been considerable, you are urged to reserve your space as early as possible.
Battleground Tours reserves the right to cancel any tour if insufficient bookings are received, rendering it impossible to provide the tour as advertised. In such a case, notification of cancellation will be provided at the earliest possible time, and no later than 60 days from the first scheduled day of the tour. We also reserve the right to cancel a tour for reasons beyond our control that render us incapable of providing said tour as advertised.
The total cost of the tour is $2,900.00 per person, based on double occupancy. If a single room is desired, the supplement is $545.00. As the number of single rooms is limited, please be sure to indicate this preference when you send your deposit.
A deposit of $250 per person is required to book your place on the tour. Should you have to cancel your booking, your deposit is refundable up to 90 days prior to the tour departure date of May 9, 2024, less a $45 per person administrative charge. Any deposit received after the tour spaces are fully filled will be immediately returned to the sender.
Fifty percent of the balance of the tour price is due before February 1, 2024. The remaining balance of the tour price must be received no later than April 1, 2024. Please make note of these dates as reminders will not be sent.
If it becomes necessary for you to cancel your trip, you may do so at any time, subject to terms and conditions listed below. Because we incur costs in processing your travel arrangements, you will have to pay applicable charges as follows:

Any booking status changes requested by our clients will be made whenever possible, though these cannot be guaranteed. If we can make such changes easily we will not charge for doing so, but we reserve the right to apply a fee of $25 for doing so if necessary.
We want your tour to be as personally enjoyable and meaningful as possible, so any special requests concerning the tour will be honored wherever possible, but are not guaranteed. Such requests must be provided in writing at the time the booking is made, or at the earliest possible date prior to the tour. If an additional charge is required to meet a request, we will advise you of it.
Citizens of the United States and Canada must have a valid passport to enter France. The expiration date of your passport must be more than 6 months after our date of departure (thus, it must be valid until at least November 15, 2024). You are responsible for having and bringing an up-to-date passport, and we assume no responsibility if you fail to do so and cannot travel as a result.
ETIAS: Starting in 2024, France along with other EU countries will begin requiring completion of an online questionnaire prior to entering the country from any non-EU country. This is similar to current USA requirements already in place for foreign travelers. The questionnaire is known as ETIAS; you will need your passport and internet access and is estimated to take about 10-15 minutes to complete. This is very important as you will not be able to travel to France without it. The ETIAS website is: https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias_en
Physical/Medical Considerations:
Our tour will require some walking on beaches, inclines, fields, and steps. Tour participants must be able to stand and walk for 20 minutes at a time without rest or assistance. While the itinerary is not strenuous, you must take these considerations into account before making your booking. You must provide us with notice of disabilities/medical conditions that might impact your travel at the time you book the tour (or, if newly diagnosed, as early as possible prior to the tour date). We do not accept any liability for your failure to inform us of limiting conditions and reserve the right to reject any booking from any person who has not notified us of relevant disabilities or who we deem insufficiently fit to participate.
Behavior:
You are responsible for your conduct and that of anyone in your travel party that you have booked. We reserve the right to refuse to book, or to remove from the tour, you or any member of your party, if your behavior or that of a member of your party is dangerous, disrespectful to other people, or otherwise disruptive. We will not provide a refund or pay any costs incurred by you under these circumstances.
Travel insurance:
We strongly urge all participants to obtain travel insurance prior to the tour. You will typically receive the best rates and coverage by purchasing travel insurance as soon as you book the tour. You can determine the level of coverage you require, but it should include items such as emergency trip cancellation and personal property protection, and applicable medical insurance (you should check with your health insurer to determine if your medical coverage is valid in Europe).
Travel Information:
We will provide booked participants with electronic informational newsletters prior to the trip, including logistics, travel suggestions, and the like. We want you to be an informed traveler!
We reserve the right to make modifications to any aspect of the tour itinerary as deemed necessary by the tour director or guide.
While we will of course make every effort to fulfill our obligations to our clients regarding all aspects of the advertised tour, we can assume no liability for damage, loss, or expense caused by events or circumstances beyond our control (‘Force Majeure’). Force Majeure is defined as unforeseeable or unavoidable situation(s) beyond our control including but not limited to: war, civil unrest, terrorism, strike/labor dispute, natural disaster, flood, earthquake, volcanic eruption, fire, adverse weather conditions, nuclear disaster, or the threat of any of these occurrences.

What our clients thought about our previous Normandy tours…
“Thanks for the trip of a lifetime. Your tour was outstanding and the traveling companions were good company.”
— Mike S., Pennsylvania
“I just want to thank you again for an outstanding trip! I could have went to these places by myself, but they would have been no where near as meaningful as you made them. I have nothing but good things to say about the trip.”
— Joe C., Ohio
“I can’t begin to thank you enough for the tour you provided in Normandy. My critique, don’t change a thing. The size of the group was perfect. It enabled everyone to have their own space on the bus, which was very important on a week long journey. The Churchill Hotel was perfect, as was their wine and breakfast (in that order). Your research into this tour and the battle itself is obvious. We were constantly on the go and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I learned a lot and made new friends. I’ll be looking forward to future tours.”
— Bob B., New Jersey
Thank you again for a great tour. It really was a great trip and one that we’ll always remember . We expected to have a great tour with you, but the week far exceeded our expectations!
— Terry A., Wisconsin
“I want to thank you for an absolutely memorable week. The tour was everything that I had hoped for and more! We went to places that I have read about all my life and never thought I would ever see. I felt that same way that I did when I was 8 years old and my parents first took me to Gettysburg. Knowing I was walking in the path that my father walked 68 years ago was a very, very moving thing for me to experience.”
— Bill T., New Jersey
“First things first…THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for arranging and leading such a fantastic trip back in time to a pivotal moment in World War II, American History, and World History. You did a simply amazing job and deserve far more credit than my command of the English language can muster. “
— Tom H., New Jersey
We had a wonderful time on the tour. It was a terrific mix of great people, beautiful scenery, excellent accommodations, good planning, and, most importantly, a highly informative overview of the Normandy campaign. You did an outstanding job in introducing us to the battlefields and explaining their significance.
— Bill S., Maryland
