 A 100th Anniversary Tour

September 16 – September 25, 2018

When the First World War began in August 1914, many of Europe’s leaders and soldiers believed it would be over in weeks. Four years later, millions had perished, a continent was devastated, and the course of world history had been altered forever. The reverberations of the conflict directly influence events across the globe, one hundred years on.

The United States’ entry into the war came late, but in the final months of the conflict the American Expeditionary Force played a vital role in ensuring Germany’s defeat. By the time the armistice came on November 11, 1918, two million US soldiers were in France, and over 300,000 had become casualties. Our tour coincides with the centennial of some of the battles we will be examining, and encompasses several different sectors where the Yanks contributed to the final Allied victory, including Cantigny, the St. Mihiel Salient, Champagne, the Meuse-Argonne, Sedan, and the Marne. We will also visit France’s premier Great War museum at Meaux, and key sites on the Verdun battlefield.

The nine-day tour, conducted by a knowledgeable and experienced staff, includes daily guided visits to battlefields, museums, and memorials throughout eastern France.

World War I

For our 100th anniversary tour, we are collaborating with veteran British battlefield guide Iain McHenry. A former soldier, Iain has many years of experience in guiding the Western Front, a subject he knows in great depth.

Iain McHenry

Born in Belfast in 1971, the son of a soldier, I grew up in Germany, England and Northern Ireland.  After leaving school, I followed in my father’s footsteps and joined the British Army. I have served in many places throughout Europe and in Asia, Africa, and North and South America. I have always had a passionate interest of Military History and have endeavoured to travel to many historical locations on my travels with the army, leading groups of soldiers on military history orientated tours. These have included El Alamein, the Falklands, Macedonia, Ypres, the Somme, and many more. I operate my own battlefield touring and research business and currently lead tours covering the Western Front from top to bottom and the World War 1 Palestine campaign. As well as conducting my own private tours, I guide for a select few other battlefield touring organizations. In addition, I have contributed to various BBC News articles concerning the Great War and Remembrance and am a co-founder of the La Boisselle Study Group, a team of World War 1 historians who carry out archival and archaeological studies of locations on the battlefields, filming them for documentaries. My first book, Subterranean Sappers, being a history of one of the British Tunneling Companies during World War 1, was published in July 2014 by Uniform Press and was selected as book of the month for January 1916 by the military history monthly magazine Britain at War. I look forward to guiding the Battleground Tours group around the battlefields of the American Expeditionary Force.
